Raloxifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) belonging to the benzothiophene class. It is an estrogen agonist/antagonist. Raloxifene’s biological actions are closely linked to estrogen receptor binding. This binding will either activate estrogen pathways in certain tissues, or block estrogen pathways in others. Raloxifene appears to act as an estrogen agonist in bone. It increases bone mineral density and reduces the incidence of fractures.
